A New View of Our Universe: Only One of Many "Everything that can happen will happen, so that if we could look out far enough we would eventually discover an exact replica of ourselves"..

I just spent the previous evening at my father and stepmom's place with the ambassador from Iceland Jon Baldvin Hannibalsson, to say goodbye to him and his awesome, but dramatic wife, Brindis, as they are leaving Washington, DC and are among my parents very best friends. There were perhaps 100 people at my parent's house in Georgetown. What an unusually great couple Jon and Brindis are, they are really in love with one another after all of these years (they are grandparents yet)! Jon is a really good storyteller, like my father, he is also a true "Man of the People" who cares deeply about the common man, unlike many other political people in DC. Well, his wife Brindis reminds me very much of my Siberian girlfriend (especially her cheekbones), and after many, many shots of Brennivin "Black Death", the national alcohol drink of Iceland, I ran home and composed her a poem, "Starlight" (to Nadia)

the skies are crystal clear tonight

a cold wind comes from the east

the light from a flickering star, many many light years away

reaches my eyes as I look up towards the heavens

I am so lucky

to know you

is what I think

as the starlight floods my body

and bathes me in its white celestial light

Trendy magazines are already asking if LA-based video artist Doug Aitken is "the greatest video artist in the world," and he's making his case in part with two new installations in Chelsea's 303 Gallery. "New Skin" follows in the footsteps of Aitken's sensational "Electric Earth," employing an elliptical narrative of a young woman losing her sight to reflect on perception and the desperate use of memory. To drive the point home, "New Skin" is projected simultaneously on four screens, each in the shape of an eye. "On" is more abstract, comprising an array of four circular screens running the length of a narrow room and reflected in mirrors. Landscapes projected on each screen are swallowed by circles of white light that are synced as they grow, leading to a gradual, wave-like effect as they swallow each tableau for eternity in the mirrors. "New Skin" is the more accessible (and cinematic) of the two, and Aitken should expect to ride the piece to even wider acclaim when it opens as part of the "Sonic Process" exhibition at the Pompidou Center in Paris next month.

Conner Contemporary Art | Leo Villareal Opening November 1, 2002 (next Friday) here in DC. Fucking brilliant, in every sense! I conceived of a company called Solarient that would purvey artists like Villareal's "light-based" art, which, "although made technologically, are imbued with an organic, living quality.."
Kent MS23 $60 Gentleman's Hairbrush from latest offering from DC international style mafia to support the recent trend of over-groomed, unselfconfident and confused men...something women have experienced for nearly a century and is now afflicting men..."likely to be conscious of their image,
consume fashion, and strive toward image
ideals. Men are more and more often judged
on the basis of physical appearance rather
than on abstract conceptions of success,
accomplishment, strength, or virility. The
influences of feminism, gay culture, and
advertising in a changing landscape of male
consumers have been suggested as possible
explanations for this change."

I get the final email from Mario Morino, godfather of the local DC tech scene for the last six years, announcing Netpreneur's (his tech mentoring nonprofit and networking dynamo) final voyage into the sunset and his new venture: Venture Philanthropy Partners - Venture Philanthropy "It is ironic that in a time of unprecedented prosperity and wealth creation, there is still chronic poverty and significant income inequality in the United States. The already large gap between rich and poor has widened even more dramatically. However, there is a convergence of broader forces at work that have set the stage for a fundamentally different approach to philanthropy, one that learns from the past while drawing upon the best practices of today and the New Economy: venture philanthropy." Time to do some good for the world, I guess!

Digital Television - Broadcast HD’s Biggest Push? One year ago last month, Ultimate Pictures/Adam & Eve Productions shot the first two high definition features in the adult industry- Whispering Hearts and Photogenic Sensations. Why? Because Ultimate Pictures? Director Nicholas Steele wanted to do it.

A particularly vitrilioc condemnation of DC versus NY (which sadly contains some true points)...The De Facto Capital By FRANK RICH "With the exception of the B-list Hollywood names who get all dressed up (once, anyway) for the White House Correspondents' Dinner, artists turn up in the city [DC] en masse only when Congress is posturing about the arts and humanities endowments..."(!!??)

"Sometimes I get deppressed that you are so far away. The life is unfair.
I am missing for you FRED." I realize that Siberia is far, but didn't Santayana say that travel is necessary "in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately..."
